 Kiss Me Kate (1949)

Cole Porter

On the eve of the first anniversary of their divorce, Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi are rehearsing for the leading roles in Taming of the Shrew. Bill Calhoun, a member of the cast, has incurred a gambling debt and tells actress Lois Lane he has signed Fred’s name to an IOU. As the play begins, Fred, as Petruchio, seeks a wife and finds a fascinating possibility in the shrewish Katherine, as played by real life ex-wife Lilli. In the meantime two thugs arrive and demand payment from Fred for Bill’s IOU. At first, Fred claims he has signed no such document, but when Lilli threatens to leave the show for Fred’s too realistic portrayals of the shrew tamer, he changes his mind. He talks the gunmen into donning costumes and escorting Lilli bodily through all the scenes for the remainder of the play’s engagement. In the end, Fred tames the shrew, both on and off the stage, their real life romance is revived and the gunmen get a good lesson in Shakespeare.

The Pajama Game (1955)

Richard Alder & Jerry Ross

Romance is blossoming at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Handsome new Superintendent Sid Sorokin falls hard for feisty Union rep “Babe” Williams, and, despite her dismissal of all things love-related, it seems she’s falling right back. That is, until Sleep-Tite employees are refused a seven-and-a-half cent raise, and the pair find themselves on either side of the union protest that results. Based on Richard Bissel’s novel, 7 ½ cents, Adler and Ross’ Pajama Game portrays the ups and downs of romance, with the added heat of politics making the temperature extra hot. Babe and Sid must figure out how to love when the principles they value most are tearing them apart.

Damn Yankees (1956)

Richard Alder & Jerry Ross

Damn Yankees is an amusing slant on the Faust legend, aging baseball fan Joe Boyd is given an opportunity to lead his beloved Washington Senators to victory by a devilish gent named Applegate.

Boyd is transformed into handsome young Shoeless Joe Hardy from Hannibal, Mo. Joe becomes the Senators' star player, but at the price of his immortal soul; he isn't terribly worried, however, since he's built an escape clause into his contract with Applegate.

To see that Joe doesn't get a chance to exercise that clause, Applegate sends his luscious assistant Lola to seduce the ballplayer. This effort doesn't work, but Applegate still manages to cause Joe to lose his chance at salvation.

But there is still a ray of hope--if Hardy can win the deciding pennant game, he'll be able to foil Applegate's master plan of causing the Senators to lose. With Lola's aid, Joe gives the devil more than his due.

Bye Bye Birdie (1961)

Charles Strouse

It's the late 1950s and teenagers from across the United States are going crazy for the handsome rock star, Conrad Birdie. Meanwhile, his manager, Albert Peterson, is going into debt and has staked his financial future on Conrad's success. Albert's secretary, Rosie, is increasingly frustrated with the time and money Albert is losing on his project. Disaster strikes when Conrad receives a draft notice to join the military. Thus, Albert attempts to stage a farewell party for Conrad in which he is to kiss one lucky fan on the Ed Sullivan Show before he leaves for the army. Kim MacAfee, from Sweet Apple, Ohio, is the lucky girl chosen to be kissed. But conflict arises when her boyfriend, Hugo Peabody, gets jealous, and Rosie becomes fed-up with the abusive treatment she receives from Albert's mother. Eventually, things turn out alright. Kim and Hugo resolve their problems while Albert agrees to leave managing, become an English teacher, and marry Rosie.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1963)

Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim’s joyous, musical romp through Ancient Rome has desperate lovers, scheming neighbors, and secrets behind every toga. Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent, and one of the funniest musicals ever written. “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” is a non-stop laugh-fest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, a fake funeral, a chase that involves the entire cast and a showgirl or two.

Fiddler on a Roof (1966)

Jerry Bock & Sheldon Harnick

Based on Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye and his Daughters, Fiddler on the Roof is the beloved story of the small, tradition-steeped town of Anatevka, Russia, where Jews and Russians live in delicate balance. During the course of the show, the time honored traditions of Anatevka are both embraced and challenged by Tevye and his colorful community, as they witness his daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava, grow up and fall in love in a time of extraordinary change. Fiddler on the Roof is a story that captures the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning.

A Little Night Music (1973)

Stephen Sondheim

Set at the turn of the last century, A Little Night Music interweaves a tangled web of former and current lovers among the upper crust elite of Sweden. Esteemed lawyer Fredrik Egerman has recently married a young virgin, Anne, whom his son, Henrik, has also fallen madly in love. Fredrik’s dedication to his blushing bride is tested when he reunites with a former flame, the famed (and fading) actress Desiree Armfeldt. Things grow more complicated when her jealous (and married) lover Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm gets wind of the reunion. The coupling and uncoupling comes to a head when Desirée convinces her mother to host Fredrik and his family for a weekend on her lavish country estate—and the Count, with wife in tow, crashes the party.

A Chorus Line (1976)

Marvin Hamlisch & Edward Kleban

A celebration of those unsung heroes of the Musical Theatre, the chorus dancers, valiant, over dedicated, underpaid and highly trained troopers who back up the star and often make them look more talented than they are.
The characters portrayed in "A Chorus Line" are, for the most part, based upon the lives and experiences of Broadway dancers. This show is dedicated to anyone who has ever danced in a chorus or marched in step .. . anywhere.

Cats (1983)

Andrew Lloyd Weber

This all-dance show's action is set on a gigantic rubbish dump which, after dark, becomes alive with cats of all types, shapes and sizes. Soon there are cats all over the place, including the auditorium, gathering for the Jellicle Ball during which one cat will be selected by the Jellicle Leader and allotted an extra precious life. It is the former glamour cat, Grizabella - turned dishevelled outcast who, at the end of the evening, is chosen by Deuteronomy to receive the prized additional life.

Big River (1985)

Roger Miller

Twain's timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel: the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck's partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck's drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family. Propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.

City of Angels (1990)

Cy Coleman & David Zippel

In the late 1940s, Stine, a bookish writer of detective stories, struggles to adapt his crime novel into a workable screenplay. As Stine tries to maintain some integrity in the backstabbing world of Hollywood, his protagonist, a hardboiled private eye named Stone, fights for survival in a city full of criminals and opportunists. In a clever design choice, the stories are told on a split stage: Stine’s world is in full color, while Stone’s appears in black and white. With wit, humor, and a fantastic Cy Coleman score, City of Angels captures the snappy dialogue of a Raymond Chandler novel and the glitzy showmanship of classic Hollywood;

The Will Rogers Follies (1991)

Cy Coleman, Betty Comden & Adolph Green

The Will Rogers Follies is a show about Will Rogers — an unique American, who, though he died in 1935, remains a beloved figure remembered for his humor, his wisdom, and his just plain common sense. At the heart of his populist philosophy was his most famous statement: “I never met a man I didn’t like.” Rogers became the biggest, most popular, and highest paid star of every existing medium of his time — stage, screen, radio, newspapers, and public appearances. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that he was the greatest star this country has ever produced.

Fosse (1999)

John Kander

Choreographer Bob Fosse was one of the most influential, renowned, and celebrated American theatre artists of the 20th century. His career, spanning nearly four decades, included groundbreaking works of theatre, dance, and film, earning Fosse eight Tony Awards for choreography and an Academy Award for Best Director. Fosse’s innovative and utterly unique style of dance--jazz hands, turned-in knees, bowler hats, gloves--has become a cornerstone of modern musical theatre. Fosse, created by his closest associates and friends, is a celebration of the great artist’s work. Fosse’s original choreography from 13 of his shows is recreated, continuing the legacy of one of the greatest musical theatre artists of all time.

Hairspray (2003)

Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman

It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire – to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network... all without denting her 'do!

Spring Awakening (2007)

Duncan Sheik & Steven Sater

Based on Frank Wedekind’s groundbreaking and controversial play (once banned in Germany), Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s brilliant rock score and searingly emotional book take the story of sexual awakening, youth revolt, and self-discovery into a new century. It’s 1891, and grown-ups hold all the cards. Headstrong Melchior and naive Wendla stumble into each others’ arms, passionate and curious, while anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society. With only each other for guidance, this group of young men and women travel the fraught and rocky path of adolescence, discovering their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way.

Kinky Boots (2013)

Cyndi Laupher

After trying to escape his father’s low-key, family ambitions for him, Charlie Price has suddenly inherited his father's shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Charlie must now face the decision of whether to pursue a new life in London with his fiancee Nicola, or return to the town in which he grew up and save his father’s dreams. Ultimately, Charlie decides to try to live up to his father's legacy and rescue his family business, and, in doing so, he finds unlikely inspiration in the form of Lola. A fabulous drag queen in need of some sturdy stiletto boots, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he's meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair find that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible. With the door thrown open and the world at their fingers, Charlie discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.

Hamilton (2016)

Lin Manuel Miranda

Hamilton is the story of the unlikely Founding Father determined to make his mark on the new nation as hungry and ambitious as he is. From bastard orphan to Washington's right-hand man, rebel to war hero, a loving husband caught in the country's first sex scandal, to the Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy. George Washington, Eliza Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and Hamilton's lifelong friend/foil Aaron Burr all make their mark in this astonishing new musical exploration of a political mastermind.

Dear Evan Hansen (2017)

Justin Paul & Benj Pasek

Dear Evan Hansen is a deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it. A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in.

The Band's Visit (2018)

David Yazbek

In an Israeli desert town where every day feels the same, something different is suddenly in the air. Dina, the local café owner, had long resigned her desires for romance to daydreaming about exotic films and music from her youth. When a band of Egyptian musicians shows up lost at her café, she and her fellow locals take them in for the night. Under the spell of the night sky, their lives intertwine in unexpected ways, and this once sleepy town begins to wake up.

Kate Fair has done seven shows at Bay: six as a set technician and run crew, four as a set master/designer, and two as a semi-actor.
